Orphé, a Berlin based ensemble, fuses oriental and Balkan folk with contemporary tango and jazz. The music is also rich because of the diverse musical backgrounds and tastes each of the seven international band members have. Four of them are from Syria, three of whom have recently arrived to the German capital. The other band members are Scottish, U.S./French, Palestinian/ German. This mixture gives the original timbre of Orphé's music where the west meets the east.
Some of the music is re-arrangements of Oriental/Turkish classics with various time signatures thrown in. 'Longa Shahnaz' is an example of this. 'Hawajess' studies the energy of Indian rhythms with an oriental touch. 'Mahbob Kalbak', another cover, shows a deep sentimental side of Orphé's music, while 'Solitude' slivers through the soul of the orient.
Orphé has become one of the most respected and unique ensembles in Berlin, playing in honorable venues and festivals such as Fusion Festival, Lange Nacht der Berliner Museen, Das Orientation Festival, Artistania Atelier, Institut Français Berlin and at Radialsystem.
